Getting a #1
Ranking
Everyone wants to be number one. Having your website rank
well in search engines is important for attracting new visitors to
your site. Submitting your URL to a selection of the biggest search
engines is not enough.
Search Engine Optimisation is all about reviewing where your
site ranks, making changes and getting the best result possible for your
website. This is something that needs to be done periodically as search
engines regularly change their algorithms for ranking sites in a
search hit list.
Here are some of the current key factors you can review yourself
:
- Page
Title
Once the page title was only used when displaying the search
hit list but the page title is of far more significance
now.
Google (the most popular search engine) uses the page title
instead of those carefully chosen lists of keywords that you had coded
into your pages. Your page titles now need to be laced with your key
search phrases.
Each page of your site can contain different keywords in the
title (the title is limited to about 10 words). Using different
keywords on different pages gives you more coverage of key words and
phrases that prospective customers will use in their
search.
For an example of keyword use in page titles, visit Sharyn Doolan Voiceover
Services.
- Meta
Tags
The Meta tags coded within your pages contain the keywords
(still used by some search engines) and the website description which
is shown by many SE in the hit list. The description can make or break
whether someone actually clicks on the link to visit your
site.
- Rich
Content
On the internet people are primarily looking for information.
Your site needs to contain more than just a general description about
your products and services. The more specific you can be, the more
likely it is that customers will choose your products and services and
also it is more likely that they will find you. If you sell a variety
of hats, mention the brands and the colours - if possible the prices.
People are more likely to search for "Akubra hat", than just
"hat".
If you are selling services, publish expert articles - you want
people to find your site when they are searching for related
information. "Rich content" will not only convince people you are what
they need but will give your site much greater exposure. Search
engines rank sites containing "rich content" highly.

Technology.
- Link
Popularity
The greater the number of other websites which link to yours,
the greater your link popularity. SE judge that your site must be more
important and therefore more relevant to searchers if many sites link
to you.
How can you boost your link popularity? Find sites related to
your business (not competitors, although their sites may give you
ideas), contact these related sites and offer to list their site on
yours - either as an ad or on a "Useful Links" page, in return for
them listing your site in a similar fashion.
There are also webrings and Groups. Webrings are
basically a group of sites relating to the same topic which link to
each other by mean of "Next Site, Previous Site" links usually
at the bottom of the page. A Group has members who are
interested in a specific subject - eg. Digital Photography. Groups are
listed in a directory and people are invited to join if they are
interested in that subject. You can also participate in existing
groups and if your expertise is helpful people will be interested in
visiting your website.
Yahoo Groups have been put to very effective use by Small Wunders Embroidery.
Sharryn has an active group where members share ideas and tips, as
well as Sharryn posting news about new designs and specials available
on her website.
Many sites have been set up as index sites. Eg. Fishy Fishing contains links
to many related fishing sites. It is worth finding as many index sites
as possible and submitting your url to be
listed.
- Paid
Listings
It cannot be ignored that all search engines have a form of
"priority listing" where your site is listed at the top of the results
list. Different search engines charge for this in different ways. Some
use a fixed advertising rate, some use a bidding system where you
nominate which keywords you want your site to appear for and depending
on the amount you bid and how many other bids there are for the same
keywords, your site is then ranked with these competing paid ads - all
appearing before any of the sites that used the free SE submission. If
you are really serious about being listed at the top, then this is a
necessary expense.
- Don't
Do
There are many services available for reviewing and optimising
your website ranking. Sometimes they offer free appraisals - you can
guarantee such an appraisal will always result in the statement
"Yes! Your website can be improved to get better search engine
rankings." They are selling a service after all! And generally this
statement will be true. There is always something that can be done -
even if you only change your targeted keywords. Who can be sure the
main keywords you have throughout your site were the right ones?
Don't panic! Improving SE rankings takes time and patience -
especially if you use the free submission options, whose turnaround
times can be anywhere between 3 weeks and 3 months. Obviously it can
take 12-18 months to get the best possible result for your website.
And don't forget - all your competitors are doing the same thing!
Today you may be number one, tomorrow your competitor may just tweak
his website enough to tip you from the top.
Don't be concerned if your website uses frames, javascript,
Flash animation or has dynamic content. Contrary to some reports,
these do not harm your SE ranking - provided they are
implemented intelligently. Used in a clumsy fashion these techniques
which are all designed to enhance your website, can and do adversely
affect your ranking.
So what should you do? Review your keywords, look at your
page titles, make sure you have specific and informative content and try
to be listed on related sites, webrings and index sites. If you are
concerned about your website ranking in search engines and need assistance
just give us a call or send us an email! You can also visit Masikati for more tips on search
engines and boosting your site traffic. Don't forget - being listed in
Search Engines should not be your only method of promoting your website!
If it is, you are unlikely to have a successful website.
And lastly, a tip from Danny Sullivan, Editor,
SearchEngineWatch.com :
Finally, know when it's
time to call it quits. A few changes may be enough to make you tops in one
or two search engines. But that's not enough for some people, and they
will invest days creating special pages and changing their sites to try
and do better. This time could usually be put to better use pursuing
non-search engine publicity methods.
